Solvation effects in near-critical binary mixtures.

A Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented to investigate solvation effects in near-critical polar fluid binary mixtures. Concentration dependence of the dielectric constant gives rise to a shell region around a charged particle within which solvation occurs preferentially. As the critical point is approached, the concentration has a long-range Ornstein-Zernike tail representing strong critical elec...

A Lattice Boltzmann Model of Binary Fluid Mixtures

We introduce a lattice Boltzmann model for simulating an immiscible binary fluid mixture. Our collision rules are derived from a macroscopic thermodynamic description of the fluid in a way motivated by the Cahn-Hilliard approach to non-equilibrium dynamics and ensure that a thermodynamically consistent state is reached in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium dynamics is investigated numerically and...

Precise simulation of near-critical fluid coexistence.

We present a novel method to derive liquid-gas coexisting densities, rho(+/-)(T), from grand canonical simulations (without knowledge of T(c) or criticality class). The minima of Q(L) identical with (2)(L)/(L) in an LxLxL box with m=rho-(L) are used to generate recursively an unbiased universal finite-size scaling function. Monte Carlo data for a hard-core square-well fluid and...

Critical fluctuations of tense fluid membrane tubules.

We show that, contrary to planar membranes under tension, tense membrane tubules exhibit important critical fluctuations originating from unidimensional Goldstone modes. The latter yield unexpected behavior, such as correlations extending over the whole tube length and the increase of the fluctuating area over the projected area with increasing tension.

Fluid-phase behavior of binary mixtures in which one component can have two critical points.

We investigate theoretically the binary fluid-phase behavior of mixtures in which one water-like component can have two critical points. We consider three equal-sized nonpolar solutes that differ in the strength of their dispersive interactions (a1 < a2 < a3, where a denotes the van der Waals attractive parameter). In each case, we compare the phase behavior predicted using two sets of paramete...
